“Travel near Bangkok city on the path of various styles at Khung Bang Kachao.
Tourist behavior has changed in modern days, resulting in various groups of tourists. Ecotourism is
one of the most popular activities. Khung Bang Kachao is one of these places that is well-known for its large
green area, and it is also easy to get to because it is close to Bangkok. As previously stated, it is no surprise
that here is a popular destination for cyclists.
Aside from riding in the large green space, there are a variety of other exciting activities for visitors
to experience. While exploring the community’s way of life, tourists can learn valuable traditions and
culture, visit beautiful holy sites, and sample a variety of sweet and savory cuisines. All of these, as well as
six routes and one festival, are covered in this travel guide. Let’s head to Khung Bang Kachao and see what
this incredible location has to offer.

History of KUNG BANG KACHAO
Khung Bang Kachao has a long history of settlement that dates back to around 1400 B.E.
There is no definitive evidence of when it was named. Except for a few sub-districts associated with
past political situations, most of Khung Bang Kachao’s history is a story or legend. As a result, the Mon’s
historical records were used to conduct an identity search in this area. The records could be traced back to
settlements between the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods.

There are numerous legends surrounding the origins of the name “Bang Kachao.” The written
evidence revealed that it refers to the entire pig’s stomach, not just the sub-district name.

For the first legend, this name was derived from the Mon language. The word “Kachao” refers to an
egret and is associated with wetlands. In the past, it was most likely a gathering spot for large egrets. Then
comes the name “Bang Kachao.”

According to the second legend, the original name of Bang Kachao was “Bang Rudklao” which was
named after the canal. Peoples escaped from the Burma Army during the second dissolution of the
Burmese-Siamese War in Ayutthaya. Women were unable to escape far enough, so they hid in the canal in
that area and tied their hair into men’s buns. The canal’s escape channel was known as “Khlong Rudklao”
Because of its distorted sound, some people call it “Ban Chaol and then “Bang Kachao.”

According to the third legend, The word “Kra” was most likely derived from a dialect, according to
the third legend. It refers to the boundary or turtle because tortoiseshells have square shapes, similar to
establishing a community patch. When combined with the word “Chao,” it refers to a community patch of
nobles who fled the war during the Burmese-Siamese War’s dissolution.

The shape of the Khung Bang Kachao area is reminiscent of a “pig stomach” formed by the bends of
the Chao Phraya River. It is situated in Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province, to the south of
Bangkok. Song Khanong, Bang Krasob, Bang Yo, Bang Nam Phueng, Bang Ko Bua and Bang Kachao are its six
sub-districts. The area is approximately 11,819 rai and is popularly known as the “Bang Kachao Green
Area” Bang Kachao was named “The Best Urban Oasis in Asia” by Time magazine (Best of Asia Edition) in
2006 as an important green area for the capital city and surrounding areas.

“This area should be reserved as a green area of Bangkok and its environment” His Majesty King
Bhumibol Adulyadej said, " because the monsoon from the Gulf of Thailand will bring fresh air into
Bangkok to eliminate dirty air for more than 9 months a year." The 1 st and 2 nd Bhumibol Bridges, which
could alleviate traffic congestion and hazardous pollution, and the Khlong Lat Pho Watergate, which helps
with floods and related concerns, were royal initiative projects to solve difficulties in the Khung Bang
Kachao area. These projects can help people in Bang Kachao live better, while still preserving the
traditional way of life, valuable culture and history, and vast natural resources.

Khung Bang Kachao’s Ecotourism

“Get cool with the Green area at Khung Bang Kachao”

Tourists can get some fresh air and immerse themselves in nature and enjoy cycling, boating and
participating in green space conservation activities such as collecting trash in The canals, planting native
trees in the area, and photographing the beautiful sunset in Khung Bang Kachao while listening to the story
of Klong Phae canal lifestyle with the legend of Khlong Phi Lok.

One Day Trip

+ The journey begins in the morning at Bang Nam Phueng market (the bicycle rental point).
Tourists can breathe in fresh air while riding down a short concrete path near the Chao Phraya River,
admiring the beautiful scenery surrounded by green trees and locals homes.

+ The next place is the Bang Nam Phueng Nok Temple where you can worship “Luang Pho Yai” the
famous Big Buddha image in the ordination hall. Murals depicting a Chinese tea set, Buddha and Mon’s
ladies dressed in attire are from the Rattanakosin dynasty.

+ Visitors can continue cycling to the Emerald Route, Bang Nam Phueng Sub-district, a 700-meter-
long concrete road painted in green, yellow, and bee as the symbol of Bang Nam Phueng Sub-district,
which is beautiful, spacious, and safe. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get involved in environmental
conservation activities by using EM balls (Effective Microorganism Balls). Then, they proceed to Moo 4
Community Forest, which has green areas on both sides of the road as well as the opportunity to
experience the shady and sultry scent of the trees.

We would thank to the cooperation of community members. Don’t forget to photograph the forest
park’s highlight, “Flower Path.”

+ The next stop is Ban Klang Suan, where tourists can take a 45-minute paddle boat ride along the
Klong Pae Canal. The highlight activity in Bang Kor Bua is a paddle boat ride down the 2.8-kilometer-long
canal while learning about the canal’s history as a vital route for locals and then participating in water
conservation and nipa palm restoration projects.

+ In the afternoon, tourists can ride to Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden, a
public park for fresh air and green area conservation. King Rama IX named it “Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan,”
and it is a popular tourist attraction in Bang Kachao in the area of the 148-rai (58.4-acre) park for
recreation based on King Rama IX ‘s ideas on green area management to preserve green areas for all.
Sathorn, Lamphu, and coconut are examples of plants that grow in both freshwater and saltwater. Visit a
more than 2-kilometer-long nature trail that is rich in ants and animals such as birds, butterflies, and
squirrels.

You can take photos of the garden’s 180-degree scenery, which includes more than 100 bird species, from
The Bird Tower.
